May 1st is generally considered the “New Year” in
the ski training world. We have all had April to run wild, and come May we
start to refocus and buckle down a little more. Since I’m no Hoff when it comes
to blogging I thought I should at least start the year off right. This means I
have to rewind all the way back to the Olympics- here goes… </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
The Olympics were obviously an unreal experience with Russia
putting on the show of the century. That side of things was far better than I
had imagined. When we were in Sochi the year before for our test event I was
fairly certain at that time that nothing would be finished. But it was, and so
the show went on. For me, although the races didn’t go as well as I’d been
imagining for the last year, in the grand scheme of things it was ok given the
year I was having. Sometimes you just have to step back and put things in
perspective. In November it was looking like I might not even make it around
the sprint course once, so to qualify, and ski a heat with three ladies who I was
sure were going to be on the podium that day was a small success, and for Dasha
and I to be so close to the final in the teamsprint was hard to swallow given
what we had done the year before and what our goals were. </div>

<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Following Sochi I flew straight to Finland to continue on
with the rest of the world cup. Lahti weekend was agonizingly close for me, I
was just outside the top 30, which is always frustrating, but I channeled my
frustrations into the next sprint in Drammen, Norway. This is one race I’ve
never done well in, in the past I haven’t even been close to making it into the
heats. My usual routine is to ski the qualifier, then go to the bakery and warm
up and dry out while my teammates get ready to ski the rounds. This year though,
I was determined not to let that happen, and I didn’t.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Although the end result wasn’t amazing, to
finish in the 20’s in Drammen was a great way to end my world cup season. The
following day I travelled home to Canmore a place I hadn’t been in over three
months. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Although I love being on the road, it’s always really nice
to come home, use my kitchen, do my own laundry, drive myself to go skiing, and
visit with friends. The last stop of the year was Cornerbrook, Newfoundland for
Nationals! The Blow Me Down Club hosted an awesome event, and it was great to
see a different part of the country, my first trip to Newfoundland was
incredible. I hope I make it back there again sometime soon. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Post Nationals I was in Canmore for one more week before
heading to Nicaragua with a group of friends and SchoolBOX to work on a school not
too far from Granada. This was a project we had in the works for the better
part of a year, so to actually get down there and get into it was awesome. It
was a total shift from ski-life, and just what I needed. The community we were
in was a truly incredible one. It seemed like everyone was lending a hand to
make this project happen. Either cooking meals for the construction crew, and
us, or coming out to help on the building site everyone was excited and doing
what they could to make a school in their community a reality. It really is
impossible to put into words the effect that SchoolBOX is having over in Nicaragua,
but one thing I can say is it doesn’t take much. Simple things like notebooks
and pencils make a huge difference in the lives of these kids, and open up
opportunities that wouldn’t otherwise be there by giving them the gift of
education. For five dollars you can give a child education for a year. And from
our experience they are thrilled to have an opportunity to learn. </div>

What now? I’m back in Canmore and not done yet! I’m eager
and motivated to get back into training, but just want to make sure I’m 100%
healthy and recovered first. That’s the last three months in a nutshell!</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
I’m heading home to Almonte at the end of May, and can’t

<div class="MsoNormal">
This season has been a lesson in patience thus far. I’m not
going to lie at times it’s been extremely trying, but I’ve been able to have a
slightly new perspective on things, and develop an appreciation for the smaller
steps and signs that things are coming along.
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
It started in November when the coaches and I decided to
delay my departure to Europe. Initially I was planning on coming over at the
beginning of December, having a week of solid training and adjusting before
racing in Davos. That got canned, and instead I spent a few more weeks in
Canmore, and at <a href="http://mountengadine.com/" target="_blank">Mount Engadine Lodge</a> (which really saved me-see faster skier
article <a href="http://fasterskier.com/article/wednesday-workout-a-day-of-altitude-at-mount-engadine-lodge/" target="_blank">here</a>) before hopping on a plane a few days before the World Cup in
Asiago, Italy. Initially the thought of delaying my start to the season was
like driving a dagger into my stomach. As a ski racer, really the only thing I
want to do come winter is be on that start line with the rest of my
competitors. I went over things in my head probably much more than was
necessary, and eventually came to an agreement with myself that this plan would
be better. After all, my goals for the year aren’t focused on the December
World Cups, or even the January ones, they are the Olympics in February. So, I
settled in and got to spend a few more weeks at home. Once I got over the fact
that I was at home and my teammates were racing I settled into the Canmore
life, focused on executing everything at the highest quality, and checking my
phone at ungodly hours to see how my teammates were faring. It’s rare that I’m
in Canmore for more than a few weeks at a time, so I really was able to enjoy
my home, knowing that this was what was going to make me strongest in February.
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
The next test came when I arrived in Asiago for the classic
sprint weekend. Back in the summer this weekend had been highlighted on my
calendar. It was pretty much a dream come true- classic sprint and classic team
sprint? Yes please! I knew coming fresh off the plane was a risk, but it was
worth a shot. I skied terribly Saturday, and only slightly better on Sunday. It
was probably partly the nerves of having a less than ideal fall training
period, coupled with travelling a few days before. A good first step, but not
quite what I was hoping for. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">

Luckily I had an awesome support team come over for Asiago,
and over Christmas, so there was no time to let the hamster in my head run a
marathon on his wheel. My family came over and we spent Chrismas in Davos,
skiing, and playing catan, and just generally enjoying each others company.
This happens far less often than I would like, as we live on opposite ends of
the country, I couldn’t have asked for a better Christmas gift than having them
join me.<br />

After a quick Christmas, we boarded the CCC Tour Bus made
possible by so many people in Canada, and headed to Oberhof for the beginning
of the Tour de Ski, which was rapidly changing format as the weather was not
cooperating. I was only planning on doing the first 3 stages of the tour, so I
did the prologue, and what turned out to be two skate sprints. Each race I came
away with some positive steps. Though small I was able to gain confidence
knowing that things are coming along. </div>

Last week was spent in Seefeld, Austria. The first few days
were with my parents, and then with Eric preparing for the next races. Though
it’s been challenging at times it’s been incredibly inspiring to watch my
teammates in the last few weeks. No one had a good start to the season, and now
things are turning around. Things can change fast in this business, and from
the start we have all been doing everything we can to make sure we are ready to
go in February. </div>

It's November! Everyone keeps reminding me there are less than 100
days until the games. It feels kind of like Christmas when you are a
kid, you wait for so long it seems it will never happen and then all of a
sudden it's here!<br />
Speaking of Christmas, it does feel a little
festive already in Canmore, because we got a huge dump of snow, this
isn't like the usual pre-season dusting that melts after a few days.
It's full on Winter here. Not only is Frozen Thunder in tip-top shape,
but it's getting longer each day, and for the more adventurous folk the
banff trail is rolled and in great shape! I was down there the other day
and didn't hit a single rock. Not too shabby for the first week of
November.<br />

Last
week Jesse Cockney I had the amazing opportunity to join Beckie Scott,
and Andrew Urton with Ski Fit North for a visit to the Morley Community
School just down the trans-canada highway from Canmore on the Morley
Reserve. It was an inspiring afternoon to have a chance to chat with the
grade sixes who will take part in the Ski Fit North program and get a
chance to ski after christmas. To say they were psyched about this
opportunity would be an understatement. We also were able to pass on a
few messages to the whole highschool about goal setting and supporting
one another. The idea is to continue this dialogue and relationship we
have built with the school as we head into the games. I'm not naive in
thinking we changed the life of every single student, but if we have
made an impact on a handful I believe we have been successful. It was a
real pleasure, the school was so gracious, thanking us with poetry
readings, gifts, and songs.<br />
A big thank you to the Morley Community School for welcoming us and cheering us on this Winter!<br />

For the next little while I will be enjoying life at the Nordic
Centre. I've had some awesome skis around the outer trails. There's
nothing better at this time of year than an endless supply of snowy ski
trails!<br />
Until next time,<br />

It is somehow October all of a sudden. The trees are yellow, and the air is chilly in the morning, reminding me just how close the winter is. When I left off last time I think I was just getting back from New Zealand, which as I mentioned was an incredible camp, but left me a little emptier in the tank than I had anticipated. I took it easy for a bit when I got back from New Zealand, briefly took up a new sport that involved a bow and arrow, and then decided to high tail it back to the most restful place on the planet for me- Almonte, Ontario.<br />
<br />
For me this small, but increasingly trendy town where I grew up is the best place to recharge. I took four days essentially off, which may sound a little excessive, but was just what I needed. Sometimes you just need to take things down a notch. This year especially I don't want to overdo things, and I know in the middle of the winter I won't be saying "gees I really wish I'd just kept training when I was so tired back in September..."<br />
<br />
Anyway, back to my mini holiday at home. Despite the fact that I wasn't training I still managed to fit in a few fun things like not one but TWO Nakkertok practices! I got out with these speedy ladies for a sprint session... <br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgbTGLTYGR2MGsBivmmyWSrpcv1kdvx6Fcbz0wzBfHYOIU-fAEVeGPWnA6nmQLhyp9ybzl2tLlTFQAt04ZptfBoZv8PCF3AhZvK9ebWEYmMY9QsnubMCwds9_Qj3vvi1CaD96Ec97ddfYyD/s1600/Nakkergirls.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgbTGLTYGR2MGsBivmmyWSrpcv1kdvx6Fcbz0wzBfHYOIU-fAEVeGPWnA6nmQLhyp9ybzl2tLlTFQAt04ZptfBoZv8PCF3AhZvK9ebWEYmMY9QsnubMCwds9_Qj3vvi1CaD96Ec97ddfYyD/s400/Nakkergirls.JPG" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">An extra big thanks to Fresh Air for lending me rollerskis and poles! Emilie, Katherine, Holly, Alex and I had a really productive day, I hope they were half as pumped as I was at the end of the workout, cause it was pretty great. -also great is the photo bomb happening here.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
One of the handy things about my brother being the head coach of the club I'm from means I get to spend some quality time with the Nakkercrew when I travel East, and one of the cool things about only getting to do this once a year is that I really can see an improvement in the athletes each time I visit. I don't think Nakkertok is ready to give up its National Championship Club title any time soon!<br />
<br />
While in Almonte I fit in daily visits to <a href="http://www.equator.ca/" target="_blank">Equator Coffee. </a>It's a spot that should be everyone's first stop as they roll into "the friendly town". Not only do they serve great coffee, but they are incredible generous people. On Saturday while I was there Equator was hosting a block party and all of the proceeds were going to <a href="http://schoolbox.ca/" target="_blank">Schoolbox</a>, which is an organization started by some fellow Almontonians that makes education possible for kids in Nicaragua. This spring a few of us in the ski community are making the trip to Nicaragua with Schoolbox to help build a school! We could still use some more manpower, so if you are interested in joining us drop me a line, we'd love to have you!<br />
We are having a fundraiser in Canmore at the end of October which will have lots of killer prizes, so come on out if you are in town!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
Now that I'm recharged from resting, and what was basically a big hug full of hometown support from my visit to Almonte I'm back at it full steam ahead!<br />
The team is down in Lake Tahoe, California for our last dryland camp of the year. The last time I was here was 2006, so it's been a while, but it's still an awesome spot, and the Cedar House Hotel in Truckee is just as warm and friendly as ever. Plus they have a cuddly border collie, which adds an extra few stars in my books!<br />

It’s been go go go since my last update which was when we went up to Castle Mtn Hut. Since then I’ve
developed a very close relationship with our new treadmill, been up to
Whitehorse to celebrate the wedding of some good friends, had a visit from my
parents and some great friends from Almonte, and been once again back at the
SnowFarm in New Zealand where I put in some seriously awesome days of skiing in
the Southern Hemisphere. </div>

The most recent part first- the New Zealand part! Dasha and
I were joined by three members of the CHEPH training center- Cendrine,
Frederique, and Anne-Marie. It was so exciting to have these girls to ski with.
Before this camp, I knew of all of them, but had never really spent any time
getting to know them. The New Zealand Camp changed that, we spent a good three
hours or so a day getting to know each other and the trails at the SnowFarm as
we skied loop after loop after loop... <br />

In short they are an impressive group of focused
young skiers.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>They ski technically
incredibly soundly, when I think about my knock kneed 17 year old self bobbing
around on the ski trails compared to these ladies, it’s slightly embarrassing
to picture how different we would look if I were to pull up an old video. It
was fun to share skis and ideas with one another, and have some female company!
I learned a few things, and I hope so did they. A few things are for sure they will be forces on
the ski trails, and I’m getting old!<br />

Our trip to Whitehorse was amazing for a number of reasons,
obviously the Nish wedding was the reason for our trip up there and was the main attraction,
but we also had a number of Northern experiences that won’t be soon forgotten.
Alain Masson the king of kick, and all around amazing wax man and leader of the most impressive JR program in the country lives in Whitehorse and invited us to
stay with them while we were in town. Alain, his wife Lucy, and their two kids
Sascha and Felix were the best hosts ever. Sascha and Felix kept Joel
entertained, while Lucy made sure we were taken care of on every other front
imaginable, and Alain guided a group of us on a bike/run excursion to a lake
where we caught a bunch of arctic char which we shared with the other out of
town guests at a BBQ later in the day! Of course the well documented JP Classic ski race was another Yukon experience that I'm so grateful we were able to attend.</div>

On the training front I’ve been putting in lots of hard work
on our new rollerski treadmill, which normally wouldn’t be that fun and I would
rather do just about anything else- but when it’s raining out, and I’m on my
own anyway the treadmill is actually ok. I’ve been developing a new
appreciation for it. I get lots of feedback, and support because the coaches
can easily take in my entire workout by sitting beside the mill as I work my
tail off until I literally can’t go another step!</div>

<div class="MsoNormal">
About a month ago I was sitting not to far from where I am
right now, in a state that I would describe as full on panic. Sometimes in my
head I can blow things completely out of proportion, and things can go spiraling
out of control. Which is pretty much what happened at our last Bend camp. My
June training camp plan was crumbling, and I was scrambling, and panicking
about what I was going to do.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
I had 3 weeks at the end of June and beginning of July where
I wanted to do some really focused good work and hard training, but I just
didn’t know where I was going to do it and who I was going to do it with. </div>

I did know a few things:</div>

and foremost I wanted it to be in a camp situation, like most people I can do
much better training when I’m away from home. I get more rest, focus more on
all the little details, and am away from distractions at home. Not to say
distractions are bad- I personally love all of my distractions they come in the
form of awesome friends, paddle board outings, puppy visits, invites from a
special nine year old to play board games, the list goes on. It is precisely
because I love all of these things so much that I sometimes can’t say no that
make training camps so productive. It also means that recovery weeks recharge
my batteries most effectively when I take them in Canmore. These things all
give me an incredible amount of energy and support when I’m not trying to fit
them in between two hard sessions, a nap and a massage.</div>

put our thinking caps on and called Zina Kocher-Canadian Biathlete. Zina is not

uphill skating is her thing, and she was able to find some funding to make the

I don’t really know where to start here. The last week has
turned Canmore and many parts of southern Alberta into a wet soupy mess. Some
people in town have lost almost everything; we have experienced an incredible

More than anything this past week has brought with it (other
than enough water to fill the great lakes) a whole lot of perspective. So many times this week
we have been able to reflect on just how lucky we are. Our house didn’t get

This camp didn't fit into the development team womens plan for this year so Zina Kocher a friend from the biathlon team decided to

second half after Zina leaves is more classic. (biathlon races are all skating) </div>

--></style>It’s the time of year where everyone is getting things going
again, this applies to me too, and it looks like I haven’t updated my blog
since September. September really? Yikes, as I looked through my phone to find
a few photos that might represent what I’ve been up to, I realized that 98% of
my photos are of my favourite canine friend Sadie. And it might be easier for
me to write a dog blog recounting her adventures than a blog of my own. </div>

Before I start posting puppy pictures I’ll try and recap
last season. In short it was my best season ever! That being said it had its
ups and downs, and there were times when I was walking a fine line between
super fit and super tired. I had to pick and choose my races more than ever to
conserve my energy. This meant very little distance racing, which wasn’t my
plan at the outset, but something had to go, and it wasn’t going to be sprint
racing that’s for sure! </div>

The highlight of the season was without a doubt in Sochi on the
Olympic courses where Dasha and I stood on the podium in the team
sprint. It was the highlight because of the result, but it is also my favourite
event of all time, and to share success with a teammate, especially one who
grew up in Russia was pretty sweet. Not to mention the fact that we are now more
excited than ever about the Olympics next year. Each and every workout for the
next eight months we will be thinking about that 1.3km snow covered track.</div>

Now lets fast forward a little bit, the end of the season
came and went, and Joel and I both needed some serious downtime. That razor
sharp edge I was on for a good chunk of the season finally got the better of me
so come April I needed some serious recovery. After spending five months on the
road working his tail off for our team Joel was in the same boat, and not
having really taken any time to ourselves since we got married in July we
escaped to our new favourite Hawaiian Island, Kauai. The ultra mellow pace of
life there was just what we needed, a little bit of feet up relaxing, a lot of
time spent in the ocean, and some solid adventuring. Add a quick stop at
Alcatraz in San Francisco on the way home, and we are recharged and ready for
another year!</div>

for our annual spring camp. Our team loves Bend, the skiing, the coffee, the
food, the running, the milkshakes, it’s all top notch. It’s so good in fact that we are coming
back for our second camp of the year too! It’s been a busy week so far with
most of our staff down here they were busy dialing in the fine details of the coming

We kicked the training year off with yet another training camp in Bend, Oregon. Great skiing, great food, great to be back with the team, and great tandem riding by Lenny, Devon and Joel.

The second annual NAWTA (North American Women’s Training Alliance) camp happened in Alaska. It was awesome last year, but this year it was even better with the addition of our entire Canadian women’s team, Finnish superstar Aino-Kaisa Saarinen, and a Michael Franti concert on the Summer Solstice we all came back home tired but really really happy.

Truthfully, I have very few excuses other than I’ve been on the road for a long time, and sometimes the internet is hard to come by. But now we are in Ramsau, Austria, and I have a break from racing, and a decent internet connection, so I’ll take a few minutes and fill you in on what’s been happening!<br /><br />Briefly I should recap the pre-Christmas period - for me personally, it was largely unremarkable. I had one top 30 result in Davos, Switzerland, and then promptly got sick the next weekend in Rogla, so I headed home to Canmore for Christmas wanting more. Christmas was a nice break from World Cup life, but I was chomping at the bit to get back on the start line and turn things around. <br /><br />The first World Cup weekend for me following Christmas was the City Sprint in Milan, and it turned into a pretty good weekend! Saturday I qualified in the top 30, and advanced into the semi-final, finishing 12th on the pancake flat 600m loop that we zipped around twice before barreling towards the finish line. I learned lots on Saturday, and was excited to put that to good use on Sunday when Chandra and I teamed up for the Sprint-relay.<br /><br />Here I must point out that sprint relays are probably my absolute favourite event. They are unbelievably hard, since you only get to rest while your partner is on course, and then you have to go again, but I love the format along with the excitement in the pit between legs more than anything. This I believe is at least partly due to the hundreds of relays I did at Nakkertok in my earlier years on Wednesday nights under the lights. If there is ever a World Cup on super narrow winding trails in the dark, I will be ready.<br /><br />That being said, Chandra and I knew that this was going to be a chaotic day. We needed more than anything to stay out of trouble. In our semifinal we had the absolute best tag-off spot, and were making up positions each lap. I got in a bit of a bind, and almost ended our day early by crashing on one of my first few laps when my ski got stuck in the wrong spot (underneath someone else’s ski) and I ended up on my rear end. Luckily I was able to right myself pretty quickly, relax, and put my head down and catch the rest of the group before tagging off to Chandra who took care of it from there.<br /><br />We squeaked through to the final as the only lucky loser team coming from our semi-final. New rules in the team sprint now take the first 2 teams in each heat, plus the next 4 fastest times. Our heat was the first semi, therefore we had no idea that the next one would ski much faster than we did! <br /><br />In the final our strategy was much the same, we crossed our fingers that no one had noticed our amazing tag spot and tried to snag it from us, and agreed that we just needed to stay out of trouble and in a good position so that Chandra could make a move on the finishing stretch. Luckily all of these things happened. We used the same spot to tag, making up spots in the exchange zone, and staying out of trouble at the same time. We were hyper aware of our surroundings at all times. On my first lap (right off the start) there were poles breaking left right and center, at on point there was one flying through the air towards me, so staying relaxed and able to react to whatever came our way certainly helped us. The other thing that helped us was Chandra’s super fast sprint at the end of the last lap which took us to the podium behind the Swedes and our Americain friends Kikkan and Jesse! <br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgjA9XP0bru1wcrmug1xrTmScTLIWhw8nI6uTa7vgMVtELy9KoPKYRarLIcpujOXuQF5E976TI8fKJ4gR8ugXgUbjbtSsv09QLM1wHFil-H22Kky1mHSVZo4Nm68sAO-FndWEMPsEOCn0T1/s1600/gals.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgjA9XP0bru1wcrmug1xrTmScTLIWhw8nI6uTa7vgMVtELy9KoPKYRarLIcpujOXuQF5E976TI8fKJ4gR8ugXgUbjbtSsv09QLM1wHFil-H22Kky1mHSVZo4Nm68sAO-FndWEMPsEOCn0T1/s400/gals.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5702391196309639874" /></a><br />It was an awesome day all round, and a great weekend to kick off 2012 on the World Cup, and get my first World Cup Podium. <br /><br />We are now in Ramsau for a little camp before we head off to Moscow for our next City Sprint!<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhjc9MqC182PIbE2rshmQ-jiq892QhumrzizvyhqC2qXcTbnu3XpFnOFhRrmcdQbs-SKpz-Jb-LjQOfSjJApe_qUkNjNl9F-zhaI_glVR3XK-d4C3WABNRukrrHqs5k1FqhEC1rxE5Q7lwu/s1600/team.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 299px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhjc9MqC182PIbE2rshmQ-jiq892QhumrzizvyhqC2qXcTbnu3XpFnOFhRrmcdQbs-SKpz-Jb-LjQOfSjJApe_qUkNjNl9F-zhaI_glVR3XK-d4C3WABNRukrrHqs5k1FqhEC1rxE5Q7lwu/s400/team.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5702391033464150034" /></a><br /><br />Special thanks to Scott, and Nordic Focus for the photos! Much like our very own Frozen Thunder in Canmore but large scale, here in Ostersund they buried an Ikea-sized mound of snow under sawdust last season. Slowly unveiling this pile a truckload at a time and turning it into a highly coveted ski track makes each day exciting as we hope for a few more hundred metres of snow to explore on our skis.<br /> <br />In the media over here they call it white gold, and that’s an accurate description of the pile of well kept snow that can only be found here. There aren’t many places in Europe to ski right now unless you want to do it in a ski tunnel.<br />That being said we did get a race in this past weekend, luckily the stars aligned for the small town of Brucksvallarna, and they pulled off one mens race and one womens race. We raced 10km skate on a 2.5 km manmade loop, but at this point we will take what we can get! It was awesome to put a bib on and ski as hard as I could, after putting the hours in all summer and fall I just want to race. <br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiTo6CQJumXz0WucTy5wB6f_G9s1CqprQrfuFWIBcOrD7OqEAQDYFlWxrxD4HtZu_uLU29xTHl71td-s1O_p5t0fTelmmn71kG_g6cAdmqnJJDP_75QgDOn0SrPAjh_I36LDIFDBCKkzF7H/s1600/snow.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 276px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiTo6CQJumXz0WucTy5wB6f_G9s1CqprQrfuFWIBcOrD7OqEAQDYFlWxrxD4HtZu_uLU29xTHl71td-s1O_p5t0fTelmmn71kG_g6cAdmqnJJDP_75QgDOn0SrPAjh_I36LDIFDBCKkzF7H/s400/snow.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5674816207935916850" /></a><br /><span style="font-style:italic;">The snow crew here in Ostersund doing their thing, making skiers happy.</span><br /><br />One day last week Chandra and I ventured out on rollerskis- which is something we hadn’t done in a long time, but we needed a break from what was then a 2km long saw-dusty loop with a little pavement and snow mixed in. The rollerski was actually amazing, we went out at 3:30 (sunset around these parts!) and explored all kinds of new terrain on our two wheeled skis.<br /><br />From here we don’t really know what’s next. My plan had been to travel up to Rovaneimi, Finland (the home of Santa Clause) today and to do some races this coming weekend, but those too have been cancelled, and we are now taking things day by day. One thing is almost for sure, I will race next weekend, but at this juncture I’m just not sure where that will be.<br /><br />Ciao for now!<br />PeriPeriannehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07136685741246621905noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1342132847976984305.post-72056394728600238492011-10-07T17:57:00.000-07:002011-10-07T18:06:05.783-07:00Park City+Whistler=3 intense but great weeks of training<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEirzAfgzw1h7_0xTxbC-nrzoFfYxw7C29cjXsY0gcLe_VgiMOiLqWZGYiT-SrDYU6rvn9oDih4tdrPhclggXbjfP_7gRxy1alAy-YquqRkPVEcuEg2KhrsWAb5DxQBGeXSm64J8Y3Y_vsxK/s1600/girls.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 231px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEirzAfgzw1h7_0xTxbC-nrzoFfYxw7C29cjXsY0gcLe_VgiMOiLqWZGYiT-SrDYU6rvn9oDih4tdrPhclggXbjfP_7gRxy1alAy-YquqRkPVEcuEg2KhrsWAb5DxQBGeXSm64J8Y3Y_vsxK/s400/girls.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5660919545169637650" /></a><br /><span style="font-style:italic;">NST ladies and CVTC ladies still smiling despite the rain.</span><br /><br />Ok, so I haven’t put much up here in the last little while, but we’ve been a tad busy. We finished up our altitude camp in Park City less than two weeks ago, and now we are just about done yet another camp in Whistler. Most of us haven’t been back here since Feb 2010, and although we have experienced a lot of precipitation it has been nice to check things out, and reacquaint ourselves with this Mountain Town. Chandra, Em Nish, Allyson and I came out 24 hours earlier than the boys to meet up with the CVTC ladies, eat some tasty food, do a little training, get some girls only time, and do some brainstorming with our sweet sport psych Sharleen. It was a pretty inspiring 24 hours that’s for sure!<br /><br />It was also great to hang out with the CVTC gals, and hear about what they have been up to over the summer. They were kind enough to adopt me last year for the pre-Christmas Nor-Am Races, so I’ve missed hanging out with them, and feeding off their enthusiasm. <br /><br />After the boys arrived we still managed to get out a few times with the ladies group. It’s so nice for Chandra and I to have a group to train with, and have a few other brains to pick after spending two weeks training exclusively with each other we have a pretty good idea what’s going on in each other’s lives!<br /><br />Our Whistler camp is drawing to a close, having done three intensity sessions including one time trial thus far, and a ski striding intensity up tomorrow before we all hop on a plane and head to the closest pumpkin pie laden dinner table. After that it won’t be long before “Frozen Thunder” our stockpile of snow in Canmore is unveiled and we will be gliding around on some of last years finest and well-preserved snowflakes.Periannehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07136685741246621905noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1342132847976984305.post-88093401212985118342011-09-05T11:03:00.001-07:002011-09-05T11:24:52.805-07:00After my great Alaskan Adventure I was in need of some serious rest. The mens team was in New Zealand, so I headed East to cottage country to catch up with my family and friends, and some warm weather.<br />It was an amazing week of rest, nothing quite beats Ontario cottage country…<br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg5K7jzslM5hll6SJLKU5eSMk8qRg4rvztE7L5e8zcuc_mYKpjei6LVpLBwMIcqvNRCnmOf1Z6-n_K11rvPXDTs-Tt0WeBQCiEwSSU5j53vpESIPH-lvCLihsiYsd_dkwrqSmiIvMSqKyYK/s1600/cottage2.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 231px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg5K7jzslM5hll6SJLKU5eSMk8qRg4rvztE7L5e8zcuc_mYKpjei6LVpLBwMIcqvNRCnmOf1Z6-n_K11rvPXDTs-Tt0WeBQCiEwSSU5j53vpESIPH-lvCLihsiYsd_dkwrqSmiIvMSqKyYK/s400/cottage2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5648938781314795410" /></a><br />I did some windsurfing, though I could have used a little more wind…<br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjv8vxgvqyOWN9U4_Y_I5GXzk_-QkeQqRRKqdfBxltzC0RyD-YokHAA1o6Cr1Z7zOejITxPBisck6XkVY4JC45DlQ4JRuQpZhfreyAGeUAImQtYD259GX_4IVgUM4wFWW304w-ty1bzuQwb/s1600/cottage1.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 268px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjv8vxgvqyOWN9U4_Y_I5GXzk_-QkeQqRRKqdfBxltzC0RyD-YokHAA1o6Cr1Z7zOejITxPBisck6XkVY4JC45DlQ4JRuQpZhfreyAGeUAImQtYD259GX_4IVgUM4wFWW304w-ty1bzuQwb/s400/cottage1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5648938497949543410" /></a><br />And when there was no wind Scout and I just went for a paddle…<br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhUQcIWrZuc6awmqtUNoWyY8JukaxkVRKVhvq2z01KhOC0c2wzXWSzgQ_2alTQbkViLs_7XtprSVJdiX9BIz6emhVkLEFlojg16MlzoJWU5Hus-zhM8zGkINXg0yFTF5fDGELx9f2KsuqtV/s1600/cottage.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 268px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhUQcIWrZuc6awmqtUNoWyY8JukaxkVRKVhvq2z01KhOC0c2wzXWSzgQ_2alTQbkViLs_7XtprSVJdiX9BIz6emhVkLEFlojg16MlzoJWU5Hus-zhM8zGkINXg0yFTF5fDGELx9f2KsuqtV/s400/cottage.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5648938258602756290" /></a><br />Oh yeah, and I trained a little. <br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiWe8xFjWgrYsjtlm7VH38uQcVQW9MRb8YNN6em9SC6tOElrhF0pcu75QUSB5kObL8ePO8khVf5ABxd_VzDII1dWefKEYPNRiWSpV0ZFmcxTYxE2xuquT-bRAel0Y9qbhNlXI3EozBQ2a-E/s1600/relax.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 268px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiWe8xFjWgrYsjtlm7VH38uQcVQW9MRb8YNN6em9SC6tOElrhF0pcu75QUSB5kObL8ePO8khVf5ABxd_VzDII1dWefKEYPNRiWSpV0ZFmcxTYxE2xuquT-bRAel0Y9qbhNlXI3EozBQ2a-E/s400/relax.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5641072136239687266" /></a>
<br />Needless to say that is the reason that I haven't been doing much blogging, but I'm back from vacationing, and have compiled some photos and words from our two week women's camp in Alaska.
<br />
<br />10 Reasons Alaska was an Amazing Camp:
<br />
<br />1- 20 girls all rollerskiing together with similar mindsets and goals. I’m pretty sure I had never previously rollerskied with a group of 10 girls, so 20 was really mind-blowing.
<br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjsWXAyh2m8wjd76NhwGk09ckFR_SpyEE9barK-gjepFC0Up91RIkuwBg3NK5py6sFUH2WgyRFDh4R6a35BSNVHEN9aW2a_Uf59dxkB-sAw24VNqwIbgIAtl1l2ERDsSwj3N3Mz1V7f3-ci/s1600/AK1.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 235px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjsWXAyh2m8wjd76NhwGk09ckFR_SpyEE9barK-gjepFC0Up91RIkuwBg3NK5py6sFUH2WgyRFDh4R6a35BSNVHEN9aW2a_Uf59dxkB-sAw24VNqwIbgIAtl1l2ERDsSwj3N3Mz1V7f3-ci/s400/AK1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5641071980056715058" /></a>
<br />2- Everyone else took lots of photos and shared them, so despite the fact that I didn’t take any, I still have an album labeled Alaska on my computer, and have some visual aids for my blogging. Thanks Matt, Lauren & Holly!
<br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi1A1hfE0GU1Q7cpD_1OBRJ99px9b7FOAWbkM_SPwAx-GBSJ7AQlDHlFoII7AKTdlZOWBwXBWzZ0wgL63kjJViI6izC0Skx6SRxcztC6Ju4_j-1yPrhdNTt7hA0rsRjBuI4Fya46aqZp8VC/s1600/AK2.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 372px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi1A1hfE0GU1Q7cpD_1OBRJ99px9b7FOAWbkM_SPwAx-GBSJ7AQlDHlFoII7AKTdlZOWBwXBWzZ0wgL63kjJViI6izC0Skx6SRxcztC6Ju4_j-1yPrhdNTt7hA0rsRjBuI4Fya46aqZp8VC/s400/AK2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5641071901233084066" /></a>
<br />3- Eric came with us, and helped us stay focused on what we were trying to accomplish- he also did his best to get an Alaskan tan while on the glacier.
<br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg2Xglb4U17LjlE9GNtg7DzTngniOONFWHBHlkQrpwErf2eBwo-byVnW2t5JxLi6LMoOS1g2mSqoC1GVcMazG62HRHuBjWVKddr7kuryBg__MHRrcChd-qZqPOeCi6wRJgOr6vMmOucJh7V/s1600/AK3.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 399px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg2Xglb4U17LjlE9GNtg7DzTngniOONFWHBHlkQrpwErf2eBwo-byVnW2t5JxLi6LMoOS1g2mSqoC1GVcMazG62HRHuBjWVKddr7kuryBg__MHRrcChd-qZqPOeCi6wRJgOr6vMmOucJh7V/s400/AK3.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5641071763220396130" /></a>
<br />4- Chandra and I got to show off our sweet new One Way gear!

<br />5- Salmon fishing season! Generous Alaskans were sending fish our way, and Matt and Liz sure knew how to cook it with an Alder branch and a BBQ.
<br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiZ013adCIi18ngqJ1mb0xAoc7ruVcmZ4wz22p3MCkepxAmPpTEspRmrLxxER1bLLRO2EeKURTH1eU2p-EUBx8Tgg0HV2BgCgrny62jmyjCf6gpyGP7v4H-I3uUa3UvV8DEjoLJUBVp87SU/s1600/AK5.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 267px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiZ013adCIi18ngqJ1mb0xAoc7ruVcmZ4wz22p3MCkepxAmPpTEspRmrLxxER1bLLRO2EeKURTH1eU2p-EUBx8Tgg0HV2BgCgrny62jmyjCf6gpyGP7v4H-I3uUa3UvV8DEjoLJUBVp87SU/s400/AK5.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5641071536301840930" /></a>
<br />6- They have snow machines on the Eagle Glacier! If the Haig had these, the “Glacier Dude” job would be even more highly coveted than it is already.<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgUTSq3bH2cY0xL_GC-I7zkiHl1f6umh9eynCt9OlaB53zJ9ci6IVsga4OLF-aITcY8oYunxiheVYNtQUvbJmyTawWAu_FN0vj9Ma0z1rw9rZbEDaUBLpPWYohphEH0Fg3PL36iSUqGrq_v/s1600/AK6.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 246px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgUTSq3bH2cY0xL_GC-I7zkiHl1f6umh9eynCt9OlaB53zJ9ci6IVsga4OLF-aITcY8oYunxiheVYNtQUvbJmyTawWAu_FN0vj9Ma0z1rw9rZbEDaUBLpPWYohphEH0Fg3PL36iSUqGrq_v/s400/AK6.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5641071277517447458" /></a>
<br />7- We all got to know each other a lot better, after spending two weeks living and training together I think we will all have a few new friends on whatever circuit we are on next winter.
<br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhATo9j5gYM1arLzeRoO-ViZ5IKMuG1QeuVT9Vb4D9nXMCkKPmmw1zCsu9btHifZRqAsLLyX_EPTBgUhOn0rcyc1n274IcRWZQrvCuZ4rrkVcDNdEfw67AYV55er4F8Ysi8Mz3I5wmAtiji/s1600/AK7.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhATo9j5gYM1arLzeRoO-ViZ5IKMuG1QeuVT9Vb4D9nXMCkKPmmw1zCsu9btHifZRqAsLLyX_EPTBgUhOn0rcyc1n274IcRWZQrvCuZ4rrkVcDNdEfw67AYV55er4F8Ysi8Mz3I5wmAtiji/s400/AK7.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5641070987208493106" /></a>
<br />8- Kikkan made us sweatshirts! NAWTA = North American Women’s Training Alliance. Look out! (especially for those hoodlums in the front row)
<br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgQaJimCZjHdjuDXWzLzAxmh8VeoPZSbsWmPwEsMLR3EBbV9s6seD7puXWQpeWe45bvkVPAnfY-2cUByhfG3DqsSi-G3e7ri2rAgsdnIcXFJVetj-JQFtr6zEBeu008dPT3phAZ9WarQXFx/s1600/Alaska8.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 253px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgQaJimCZjHdjuDXWzLzAxmh8VeoPZSbsWmPwEsMLR3EBbV9s6seD7puXWQpeWe45bvkVPAnfY-2cUByhfG3DqsSi-G3e7ri2rAgsdnIcXFJVetj-JQFtr6zEBeu008dPT3phAZ9WarQXFx/s400/Alaska8.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5641069336621153890" /></a>
<br />9- We got a couple of wicked helicopter rides from Alpine Air.
<br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgOzy_wSNn4ur3K5bfUmsDenQH2ZN3seu0TwIGHzFzwuJisAqCSLfgNLqvwLvLfljipBaz5GtCX7P7_Dsx5fuIUacQ4TbvLR_mExPTjdEQ0KG7V2AL2qCnT7B-KD6OZoVegFUKffKR1DCfK/s1600/Alaska+9.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 236px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgOzy_wSNn4ur3K5bfUmsDenQH2ZN3seu0TwIGHzFzwuJisAqCSLfgNLqvwLvLfljipBaz5GtCX7P7_Dsx5fuIUacQ4TbvLR_mExPTjdEQ0KG7V2AL2qCnT7B-KD6OZoVegFUKffKR1DCfK/s400/Alaska+9.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5641069124093627858" /></a>
<br />
<br />10- I finally got to see this place that Kikkan talks about all the time, and it is pretty sweet. More rollerski paths than you can cover in a week of training, a glacier just a short jaunt over a ridge, and fresh salmon just about everywhere you look.
<br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiS4mV8EnCVAtuB6CXrEr4I4SM3XGG4ucn2iv5Olh4fjWetXHrnkNrabx5YILUafisiiuUhWzAUUVzH-lhaA4L86QQzwOFvb9mzNt7f4p_CJUCnLkeJlg4uTqNAqt8MwnObi4vPfYkl9mCA/s1600/Alaska10.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 243px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiS4mV8EnCVAtuB6CXrEr4I4SM3XGG4ucn2iv5Olh4fjWetXHrnkNrabx5YILUafisiiuUhWzAUUVzH-lhaA4L86QQzwOFvb9mzNt7f4p_CJUCnLkeJlg4uTqNAqt8MwnObi4vPfYkl9mCA/s400/Alaska10.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5641068952268158002" /></a>
<br />Thanks to everyone for making this such a great camp, especially Erik Flora and the APU gang for hosting us, and the USST coaches, Matt and Grover. It was a wicked productive camp. Lets do it again sometime!
